“Art is a wound turned into light.” ~Georges Braque

Freedom School
Research shows that socially and economically disadvantaged children benefit from high levels of arts engagement. Freedom School is a national initiative of the Children’s Defense Fund® designed to increase literacy and positive attitudes toward learning for at-risk youth. In the summer of 2016, Appleton Episcopal Ministries established the first Freedom School in Macon for 50 students in rising grades 1-3 deficient in reading. The Arts Center has been an integral part of this program since its beginning.

GA Industrial Children’s Home (GICH)
The Arts Center established a collaboration with the GA Industrial Children’s Home in 2017. GICH is a residential program that serves at-risk male youth ages 11-21 years. The Arts Center, with the help of talented volunteer artists, provides a multimedia visual arts curriculum for these boys after school once per week during the academic year.
